September 30 - "Missing the Point"

The words “Adam and Eve” immediately bring to mind the things that summarize that story for us. The Garden of Eden, an apple, a serpent, and even fig leaves all give us queues to the story line  But those are not the real points of the story.

The story is about the first instruction ever given. It was a simple directive. It was clear and precise. It took no thought or evaluation to understand what behavior was right and what action was wrong.

As we study CHOICES this month, it seems only logical to examine this first of all great, or more properly, Infamous choices made. Why did they make that choice? What is it about them (and us as well) that caused them to make a choice that really was not a choice at all?

To me a choice is about chocolate or caramel on my sundae. Or a choice is determining what car would be most practical and economical for my family. A choice should always be about what is better or best, never right or wrong.

How come we think that in the face of a clear directive from God of right and wrong we have any choice at all?

There are a lot of answers to that last question. Those are the answers we will try to unravel in our message this Sunday morning. Then we will take those answers and find the encouragement to live a life that follows, not a life that chooses.
